The Nganasans. Surrounding Society and the Main Economic Activity of the Region

Economically, the region is dominated by Norilsk Nickel , a Russian mining company, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium. It is located in the vicinity of Norilsk forming a single urban conglomerate with mining satellite towns Kayerkan, Oganer, and Talnakh. It is mostly populated by the company’s out-of-region personnel. Lately, some of that population shifted to rotation-based work on the Taymyr Peninsula. The company’s tremendous economic potential has an effect on the essential services for the entire region. Still, environmental problems are equally great; they emerged when Nornickel started operating and continue until now. They rigorously transform the system of providing essential services for the indigenous rural population (including Nganasans) and result in changing survival strategies.
